The Journey Begins…With Obedience

While it is very important to obey God because of what He says, it is even more important to obey Him for who He is. – Joy Dawson

Can you think of something in your life that you’re really good at? Something you hold very dear that you enjoy so so much, which you believe is a gift from God. For some it might be singing or dancing; for others may be teaching, leading, or preaching; and still for others it could be using your hands like carpentry, construction, or sewing.

What about the things that you value, but are less tangible: a deep connection with a soulmate, a loved one, child or spouse; your career or that perfect opportunity, the hope for more children in a sea of “not possible.” What if tomorrow God took it away? What if tomorrow God. Said. No. Could we still serve Him? Would we still serve Him?

We love to talk about God removing negative hindrances from our lives that might be getting in the way of serving Him. But what about something we have that we enjoy & love?

It’s easy to obey God when we have a heart to reach & minister to thousands & He says “I want to give you a public platform & use you to reach thousands.” But what about when we have the heart to minister to thousands & God asks you to stay at your rural church of 50? Do we obey Him because he is asking us to do something that we find exciting & exhilarating? Or do we obey Him because He is God & He is Sovereign, Holy, & truly the Lord of our lives?

God wants to bring us to the place where what He tells us to do is not nearly as important as who He is who gives the order. – Joy Dawson

I’m a worshipper. I love worship at church, in my car, in the shower, anywhere! I just love all of the elements involved in live worship at church. Recently during Sunday morning worship at my church God asked me another one of His random, deep questions. “If you couldn’t sing anymore, would you still find me worthy? Would I get less from your heart because you could no longer do it the way you love? Could you, would you, follow where I lead simply because I am your Lord?”

Job, looking at his wife with strength & tenacity, after she demeaningly told him to curse God & die, replied, “Though He slay me, yet I will trust him.” Even though He has taken everything away from me & He could still possibly take more, I will not turn my back on Him. I will not refuse Him everything He is worthy of simply because I feel my life isn’t going the way I want. I will obey & follow the Lord because He truly is the Lord of my life & He can do with me what He will.

God is taking me on a journey that all started a year ago. A journey which I have no idea how to navigate except step by step through Him. A journey through womanhood, motherhood, ministry, & even secondary infertility. Last July, in a prayer meeting, I was praying about this journey & God spoke two things: bring others along with you & “A Girl & Her God.” It seems scary to me. But I truly believe God has something to say & this blog is something He has asked me to do. So let’s grow & journey together through these intimate waters believing God will speak to us all.

  1. Thanks for sharing this. I’m excited to read more of your blogs. We definitely need each other, especially when it comes to the sensitive topic of infertility. When I was at my lowest point, God led me to the “waiting on baby bird” blog which has been life changing for me. I’m praying for you and Anthony! Keep up the good work.

    1. Thank you friend! We definitely do need each other! I’m so sorry you’re also walking through it, but I am so glad to hear that you’re clinging to the Lord through it all! When God leads us, it can never be to a place He doesn’t want us. He will always lead & guide us to exactly the right place in Him.

      1. You’re absolutely right. God has been teaching me so much. Even though this process is incredibly painful at times, I know it’s ultimately drawing me to Him in a way that I may not have.

  2. What a beautiful word my sweet girl! One of the greatest lessons we will learn on this journey called “life,” is that we do not have to go alone! It’s my choice to tough it out, making my own decisions, or to keep my eyes squarely on Him and let Him lead! I see you’ve chosen the “better part!”
“Be still and know that I am God…” He’s got this and He’s got you! Love you much!
